Message from our President!

South Dakota Chapter of HIMSS Members

Summer is Here!!!

Welcome to Summer and the closure of the 2019 fiscal year for HIMSS.  As the Board met for the Annual Retreat on June 20th and looked at the year in review, it was another very exciting, eventful, and memorable year of accomplishments for the South Dakota Chapter of HIMSS.  Highlighting this year were the initiatives to enhance communication efforts to the membership and to continually improve our chapter’s website with current information.  We also accomplished the review of our Chapter’s Membership list which was a considerable, collaborative achievement completed by the Organizational Affiliate Ambassadors.  Maintaining a current membership list will now be an annual goal, achievable with our Ambassadors.

The Spring HIT Forum was very successful this year in spite of the postponement of the event from the original scheduled date of April 11th to June 5th!  We were very fortunate in that the change in the date actually brought in more registrations and placed this year’s Spring HIT Forum as one of the top year’s for registrations and attendance!

The highlight of this year’s Spring HIT Forum featured the National HIMSS Speaker, Rod Piechowski, from Chicago, presenting on Data and Ethics.  His talk was very interesting, as he engaged and explored with the audience the concept of the ethical use of data in healthcare today.  He spoke about “technology as fundamentally changing the way we collect, save, and move information” and the challenges that creates for business and especially healthcare organizations.  The audience was clearly captivated and intrigued, and there was continued discussion of the topic, in small groups, throughout the day.

Other speakers on the program for the day presented on a varied array of topics relevant in healthcare today. Presentations ranged from Data Management, and Social Engineering, to specialized project presentations on Zero Suicide, Sepsis Care, and a five-year project on improving care for patients with Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease.  The break for Lunch included an entertaining as well as motivational talk on Company Culture by John Meyer, from Lemonly.

The Election to replace four Board members was held in May.  The Election closed on May 24th and the final votes were tallied the following week. The outcome of the Elections were announced at the Spring HIT Forum on June 5th, during the Membership Meeting.  The new Board members are:

President- Elect                           Brookes Noem

Treasurer                                    Renee Hajna

Communications Director             Eli Seeley

Membership Director                    Kristi Jones

It is now time to pass the President role over to Brenda Soper, who moves from President-Elect to President beginning in July, for the next fiscal year, 2019-20.  Please welcome her as we embark on the next exciting year for the South Dakota Chapter of HIMSS.

Lastly, “Thank you” for allowing me to serve as your President this past year.  It has truly been a great experience, and I’ve enjoyed all aspects of the journey.  I will fondly remember the people I’ve had the pleasure to work with and for the new relationships that were formed.  I look forward to continuing the journey as the Past-President and my volunteer experience as a member with HIMSS.
