Message from our President!

                                                  August 2019

Hello fellow SDHIMSS members!

The tell-tale signs of fall are starting to appear with the kids going back to school and a little bit of evening chill in the air. Our new board members are enthusiastic for the upcoming year. As the new President of the chapter I would like to thank Marcine Forrette, Past President, for all of her leadership over the last year. She led our chapter in a very successful year and it was an honor to learn from her. As the New Year starts I am excited to work with and to form relationships with all of our talented board members and with all of you. This is a volunteer position and it takes someone special to want to enhance our HIMSS’ chapter and to continue to move it forward. Thank you to all of you!

At this time we have 417 members in our South Dakota chapter. Our goal this year is to enhance our membership by engaging students who are learning how technology can advance our healthcare systems. These individuals are our future and we want to be there to help in the mentoring process. We also want to enhance our Organizational Affiliate Ambassador programs by having individuals at our organizational affiliates who can be a resource to our members. The current Ambassadors are Michelle Walter at Avera Health; Erica Knippling, at Brookings Health; and Marcine Forrette at Sanford Health. If you have any questions regarding this program please reach out to the Ambassadors or any of the board members.

I am also excited to report that our Chapter Advocates, Holly Arends and Marcine Forrette, have been working hard on our behalf. It’s important to have support at the national and state level to demonstrate how information and technology can transform health and create healthy communities. Holly has written to Governor Kristi Noem requesting that South Dakota join other states in proclaiming September 23-27 as a U.S. National Health IT week. Thank you to Holly!

One last thing… We are always looking for volunteers to become involved in our different committees. We have the membership committee, program committee, sponsorship committee, and nomination committee. As I have learned, it is a privilege and honor to belong to something bigger than yourself. I always enjoy collaborating with others across our great state and I know you would too! Please reach out if you are interested.

Best regards,

Brenda Soper,

President, South Dakota Chapter of HIMSS
