December 2014 Newsletter

Greetings from the President!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday season, I can’t believe that we are already at the end of 2014.

Looking Back – My first six months, as your President, have been a whirl-wind.  Although we have accomplished a lot, including hosted an education tract at the SDAHO Convention, developed and implemented a defined sponsorship program, completed our financial review, constructed a new website, and updated or created operational policies; there are things still to do, but we will come back to that.

Today – I would be remiss, if I did not take an opportunity at this point to say a few thank you’ s.  First, thanks to your faithful board members, who dedicated their time and talents to the furtherance of South Dakota HIMSS.  My second thank you goes to the general membership members who have volunteered to serve on the Program Committee, the Financial Review Committee, the Sponsorship Committee, the Bylaws Committee, and the multiple Communications Committees.  The chapter could not have accomplished so much without your enthusiasm and commitment.  Finally, I would like to sincerely thank the ladies that went before me as President; Patti, Dorine and BJ, we would not be where we are without the groundwork you put in place to help me succeed in this role.

Looking Forward – Hopefully you are asking yourself, what’s next, I believe 2015 will be a banner year.  We will host our first Clinical Informatics Boot Camp, along with our annual Health Information Technology Forum; see the website for details.  I also believe, we will start a study group for those wishing to pursue a HIMSS certification, and there is still work to be done in formalizing our operational procedures.  If you would like to assist the chapter in achieving some of these goals, please consider volunteering for one of the established committees.  Finally, the Nomination Committee will be looking for members interested in pursuing a board position, see separate article for details.

In closing, I would ask each of us to take a moment to reflect on the meaning of the song that traditionally closes out each year, Auld Lang Syne.  It is said that the original poem called into question whether it is right that old times be forgotten, and goes on to call for the remembering of friendships and accomplishments.  This is a year I will not soon forget, first for the friendships cultivated and second for the trust you placed in me to lead our chapter.

Thank you and have a blessed new year.

Bobbi Jean Jarvinen, President
